When you understand what your dog is communicating, challenging behavior starts to make more sense. We teach you how to read the signals, understand what your dog needs, and respond in ways that build confidence, trust, and more possibility for both of you.
What are you and your dog navigating?
Dogs communicate in all kinds of subtle ways. Especially when something feels exciting, uncertain, frustrating, or overwhelming. Here are some of the situations we help people and dogs navigate together.
-
Your dog may bark, lunge, freeze, spin, or struggle to stay connected when dogs, people, sounds, or other triggers appear. Those big responses often make more sense when you learn to notice the quieter communication that comes first and what your dog needs in that moment. Haru’s family learned how much he had been saying before his reactions became loud, and how listening earlier could change what happened next.
-
Big greetings, persistent barking, Your dog may greet the world at full volume, with jumping, barking, whining, pulling, humping, or enough energy to make settling feel nearly impossible. Learning to notice how that excitement builds can help you respond while your dog still has room to connect with you. Ginger’s family learned to hear the small signals that came before the volume went up.
-
Your dog may retreat, startle, become still, avoid touch, hesitate to leave home, or need extra time before something feels comfortable. Small changes in posture, movement, curiosity, play, and willingness can tell you a great deal about what feels possible today. Blaire helped Wendy learn to recognize those quieter answers and build everyday life around more wholehearted yeses.
-
Food, toys, resting places, touch, grooming, veterinary care, or simply reaching toward your dog can carry more meaning than you expect. Watching how your dog responds to approach, touch, space, and choice can turn these moments into clearer conversations about comfort and trust. Rio and his family developed a shared language that helped touch become something they could navigate together.
-
Walks can include pulling, rushing, zigzagging, stopping, planting, or long negotiations about whose idea this outing was in the first place. Your dog’s pace, attention, hesitation, and enthusiasm can help you understand what they need from you as you move through the world together. Streak’s family learned to turn their walks into a conversation, one pause and willing step at a time.
-
Your dog may love other dogs, feel uncertain around them, need more space, or communicate differently depending on who approaches and how. Learning to read invitations, pauses, requests for distance, and decisions to return can help you support social experiences with greater confidence. Frank taught Laura how much information lived inside those choices, eventually opening the door to a kind of freedom she once struggled to imagine.
-
Bringing home a new dog can fill ordinary days with questions about walks, pottying, greetings, settling, routines, and whether you are getting this whole dog-parent thing right. Your new dog is learning about you while you are learning about them, and every response gives you useful information for what to try next. Bodega helped Julia and Justin build that shared learning process from the beginning.
-
A new home, neighborhood, schedule, family member, or way of life can change what your dog has to process every day. Watching where your dog finds curiosity, comfort, connection, and growing confidence can help you decide when to make the world smaller and when they are ready to explore more of it. Sierra’s journey from an overwhelmed newcomer to an increasingly adventurous companion shows how beautifully that world can expand.
Behavior is communication.
Every pause, glance, wiggle, and change in breathing gives us information. Reading those signals together with the context and environment helps us understand what your dog needs.
A dog who barks may be asking for space, expressing excitement, responding to uncertainty, seeking connection, or communicating something else entirely. The behavior gets our attention. The context helps us understand what they’re saying.
We look at the whole picture: your dog’s body language, emotional state, environment, history, and what changes from one moment to the next. That gives us more useful information about what your dog needs and how you can respond.
Before we decide what to do, we learn to read what’s happening.
When you understand the signals, you can change what happens next.
READ
See what your dog is telling you.
Notice movement, breathing, posture, expression, attention, distance, and what changes from one moment to the next. With practice, subtle signals become useful information you can recognize earlier.
UNDERSTAND
Make sense of what you see.
Bring those signals together with the environment, what happened before, and what your dog may want or need in that moment. Context helps you move from seeing behavior to understanding the communication behind it.
RESPOND
Help shape what happens next.
Offer space, movement, connection, choice, play, reinforcement, or clear guidance based on what your dog communicates. Each response gives your dog information too, creating a conversation that becomes clearer with practice.
Read with curiosity. Understand with empathy. Respond with confidence.
Different dogs need different kinds of support.
Sometimes you need coaching while you practice with your dog. Sometimes your dog benefits from focused practice with me. Sometimes we need to work together in the places where life actually happens.
We’ll help you choose the kind of support that fits your dog, your goals, and your everyday life. Whichever path we take, you’ll understand what we’re doing, what your dog is communicating, and how to carry the learning forward.
-
We work side by side with you and your dog, practicing the skills that matter in your actual life. That might mean working at home, walking through your neighborhood, visiting a park, or practicing around the situations your dog finds challenging.
We’ll help you read what your dog communicates in real time, understand what may be driving the behavior, and practice responses that feel clear and achievable. You get coaching and feedback in the moment, while your dog gets the support of someone they already know and trust: you.
-
Virtual sessions give us plenty of room to observe, troubleshoot, review video, and build your skills from home. They can be especially useful when the challenge happens inside the house, your dog feels more comfortable without a new person present, or geography makes in-person work impractical.
You’ll learn what to notice, what it may mean, and what to practice between sessions, with support tailored to what you’re seeing in your own environment.
-
Sometimes your dog needs more practice than your schedule can reasonably provide. We can work directly with your dog on walks, outings, social experiences, environmental confidence, or specific skills while you get some time back in your day.
You’ll stay connected to the process through updates, observations, and coaching so you understand what your dog is learning and how to support that learning when you’re together again.

A program tailored for you and your dog.
Every dog brings their own history, preferences, challenges, and personality. You bring your own routines, goals, abilities, and bandwidth. We build your training plan around both, then adapt it as you learn more about each other.
1. It Starts With a Conversation
What does life look like for you and your dog right now?
In a 30 minute Free Consultation on Zoom, we’ll talk about what you’re noticing, where things feel difficult, what you’ve already tried, and what you hope will become possible. This gives us a first look at the whole picture and helps us decide where to begin.
2. Then We’ll Tailor Your Plan
We’ll turn your goals into practical next steps.
Based on our evidence-based education, and over a decade of experience, we will identify what your dog needs and choose an approach that fits your everyday life. Every step of the way you will understand exactly what we’re working toward, why we’re doing it, and what you can practice between sessions.
3. Learn, Practice and Grow Together
Build skills where they matter, without spending time on what doesn’t.
We practice in the situations that matter to you, whether that’s at home, around the neighborhood, at the park, or somewhere new. We’ll guide you through what to notice and how to respond, while giving your dog opportunities to practice on their end of the leash.
4. Listen, Understand, Adapt, and Adjust
Your dog helps shape every step of the process.
Training gives us new information. As your dog responds, we’ll notice what’s helping, adjust what needs to change, and build on what’s working. Your plan evolves as both of you gain skills and confidence.
